Corrupted Utopia

by Kaila, student at Devereux Cleo Wallace

A life we pretend to live because we are angry,

People that pretend to love through their insanity,

A leader that leads for his greed,

A world corrupt by things that we don’t need,

Children at home, momma doesn’t feed,

Friends fighting because their colors bleed,

Daddy’s not home because he got shot doing our nation’s deed,

Children bred with ruthlessness begging to lead,

Children being killed because Daddy spread too much of his seed,

Before man as our judge we plead, and god as our witness through the Devil he’ll see,

Pray for a better world and yet through our sins our god will mislead,

Stuck in a world and living ashamed we,

Live to die through our insanity,

A president more fraudulent than the nation he leads,

A new world order conspiracy the government hides from those not worthy,

A confused world living in a world our leaders perceived,

Citizens dying for a country that overlooks the “we”,

Gunshots waking children in the night,

Mothers unfit to care for their kids take flight,

Terrified soldiers shedding blood in our nation’s vanity,

Police neglecting our nation’s street wars and insanity,

Parents in prison for the bruises they lay on their kids,

Forgetting the days they acted as their children did,

Riots on streets because an incapability to accept us as we are,

We wonder how a utopian world is so far,

With dead bodies lying in our soldier’s arms,

Thieves setting off expensive car alarms,

Momma at home smoking crack,

People paying hit men to get someone whacked,

Guns pointed at hustlers’ heads,

Door kicked down by the Feds,

Suicides due to stress,

Murderers taking lie detector tests,

SOS on the wrong person’s heads,

Prostitutes crawling into married men’s beds,

At a graveyard I sit and reflect,

To all the dead homies I pay respect,

Alone we walk down the street aspiring to a sense of feet,

Praying to a god we can’t see,

In a world of hatred he’ll find,

A kind spirit worth a nirvana sense of mind.

Unnamed Lyrics

by Devin, student at Synergy School

It causes me to be so stressed and so desperate,

Do anything to impress it,

I want it so bad I’m obsessed with it,

Whatever it is I can’t guess it,

But it’s beautiful and majestic,

Yet I sweat ‘cause it’s hectic,

I flex to the sense of its essence,

‘cause I can’t contest with its excellence,

I’m blessed by its presence,

Obsessed with presentin’ presents to you,

And to see you blue is like a noose around my throat,

Express the way I feel through these sentences I wrote.

At Youth On Record and Flobots.org our mission is to empower students to express themselves through music. The following are fantastic examples of how powerful our student’s words can be. We count on our students to inform us educators how they see the future and their role in it, so that we may best help them prepare. It is truly amazing what many young people will do and say when given an opportunity to succeed.
