It is a good day when you play an album for the first time and what you hear puts to rest any anxiety about where the band’s sound is headed. Such is the case with the new album from Laramie, Wyoming (don’t hassle them, they’re almost local. . .) pop-punkers Teenage Bottlerocket. With Tales From Wyoming, the guys have shown that they can take their trademark sound out on an walk but still manage to find home again. They stretch far beyond the reaches of their previous release Freak Out and experiment with a mellow side, a rock side, and even a more hardcore side than the prior album.

This album proves that the guys have a unique ability to navigate corners of the punk rock abyss that many bands drown in. Songs like “Cockroach Strikes Again” and “Can’t Quit You” showcase the band’s ability to lean heavily on their impressively strong vocal talent, and “First Time” maintains pop-punk lyricism and emotion but in a stripped down setting that almost had me checking my player to make sure I was still listening to the same band. A very worthwhile listen for those of us still interested in holding on to the truly satisfying feeling of good pop-punk. Catch Teenage Bottlerock with Pennywise, A Wilhelm Scream, and Wiredogs March 14 at the Gothic Theatre.
