On Saturday July 7, local indie-rock band Ramona Flowers played Everyday Joe’s coffee house along with Just Another Day. Ramona Flowers is made up of Jayce Curtis on rhythm guitar and vocals, Steven Davis on lead guitar, Josh Peck on bass, and Cosme Martinez on drums. Curtis describes their musical style as all over the place, sometimes with energy dipping into pop punk; other times, more complicated and instrumentally mature with influences coming from all over the place. When asked about where the band name came from, Davis responded “we were watching the movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” in our friend’s basement, and we wanted a kind of obscure band name, and we were fascinated by the character Ramona Flowers. We were also starting to book gigs and just needed a band name and it kind of stuck.” Curtis jokingly jumps in, “Plus, we’re all just kind of nerdy guys,” he says, motioning to the Millennium falcon t-shirt he wears.

Just Another Day is a high-energy alternative rock band comprised of Riley Thompson on vocals and bass, Carson Clear playing drums, and Aditya Kamath on guitar. Barely into high school, they are an ambitious young rock group with high hopes for the future success of their band. Thompson reports they are excited to have played this as their first headlining show. With a good array of original songs, as well as covers of classics like “Killing in the Name” by Rage Against the Machine, Just  Another Day put on an entertaining show that kept the audience cheering.

Ramona Flowers opened with “Time Will Tell” for the small but enthusiastic crowd. With plenty of banter about wizardry and glasses between songs from front man Curtis, they put on an amusing show without taking themselves too seriously. In a touching moment, former bassist, Tucker Valentine, took the stage to play “Clarity” with them. Other notable tracks included the catchy tune “Goodnight, Satellite,” “Wherever You Are,” and “Birmingham,” all of which can be found at soundcloud.com/ramona-flowers.
