Laura Brehm: A Walk Through a Record Store

I first met Laura Brehm in a freshman Music Theory class at the College of Arts and Media in Denver. She stood out as one of the best students in the class, with a serious drive to learn everything she could about the music business, and a strong passion for songwriting and performing. At the time, she was a young musician just breaking into the Denver scene, but I had a feeling that she had a bright future ahead of her. Just four short years later, Brehm has exploded onto the Denver scene with numerous releases, ranging from original albums to one-off singles, with some of the biggest EDM producers around. We caught up while walking through Twist and Shout Records, and I snapped some pictures while we were in the store, so check them out to see some of Brehm’s favorite artists and biggest inspirations.

CMB: When did you start writing your own music?

LB: I started writing songs when I taught myself how to play the guitar at 13 years old. The songs started out as poems, but as I learned chords I began to put my lyrics to music. Over the years of practicing my song- writing skills, I have filled up more than ten notebooks with songs, many of which have never been heard by anyone. My process for writing varies; sometimes I write the lyrics first, and sometimes the music comes first.

CMB: What are your other side projects?

LB: I am in a project with Athena Stirman called “Where Parallels Meet.” My electro/acoustic and singer/songwriter style fuse with her electronic/hip-hop/classical style. We have one single out so far, titled “Buried.” I also write and record vocals for many different producers in the EDM scene. I have released songs with the Digital Connection, Hollidayrain, James Egbert, Ecotek, TwoThirds, and Danilo Garcia, so far, and have many more collaborations in the works for future releases.

CMB: Who are some of your local inspirations?

LB: I get a lot of inspiration from the people I get to work with, in person, here in Colorado. Athena and I met our freshman year of college and instantly found that we connect through music. We have spent a lot of time working on music together, and will continue to do so. Sreyas, of Hollidayrain, was a big help to me in making my way into the EDM scene. He remixed my song “The Sunrise” and we did two collaborations together. We plan to release some more songs in the near future. James Egbert is also a big inspiration for me, and I got the opportunity to be featured on his EP In the Beginning, which showcases his incredible talent. Another really big local inspiration for me is Nick Cocozzella of Kill Paradise. He produced my first two albums and has helped me get to the place I am now in music. He is currently working on his fourth album. There is a lot of other local talent in the Denver/Boulder that continues to amaze me. Colorado has a great music scene!!

CMB: What are your plans?

LB: My plans are to self-produce my third album, which is titled Breathe Music, and to continue to work as a vocalist in the electronic scene, doing collaborations. Since I am just beginning my career, I am open to experimentation and to all different styles of music! I also plan to work on my live set and to begin playing shows.
