Boulder’s SunSquabi On Tour March-April, Headline Fox April 24

SunSquabi is one of Boulder’s brightest starts rolling into 2015, and the group will be headlining the Fox Theatre April 24 with Skydyed and Tnertle following tour dates in March and April that include the Mcdowell Mtn. Music Fest in Phoenix and a string of dates through the Midwest and south. CMB caught up with the group to find out how they broke out of Boulder and how they make their self-described ‘lectric-hydro-funk’ sound happen.
CMB: What methods of promotion, and/or action, have helped you guys gain recognition out of Boulder?
SS: We love being able to travel and meet new people out on the road, but more than that it’s about making a unique and long standing connection with people. The fans, other musicians, managers, local concert promoters in each town ; all of these people are what make it possible for us to grow in new places. We make a conscious effort to keep our connections strong and fluid with everyone that we meet, and if you treat people with respect, respect will come back to you.
CMB: What are some of the most successful markets you play in?
SS: We are very fortunate to have longtime fans and diehard supporters in places we (until the last few years) had never been to before in our lives. Places like Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, and Milwaukee have shown us so much love and helped us have the ability to tour in the surrounding regions. But the list keeps growing all the time. We have been sort of discovering our California family this past year and we’re excited to get out and play for our fans in the Northeast very soon!
CMB: Walk us through your songwriting process.
SS: The process is always evolving, and most definitely not in any strict format. We improvise a lot in rehearsal just to hash out new ideas. Our last ep “Thunder” was created by recording several of these improvisations, selecting the best parts, and then reproducing them and adapting them to work together as a complete song. But like I said almost every song is written a little differently, which has allowed us to keep a diverse catalog.
CMB: What direction do you see electronic music heading over the next couple years? Do you see it continuing to mesh with other genres, like what you are doing?
SS: We had the chance to meet Alex Grey at this year’s Gem and Jam in Tucson, AZ. We talked a great deal about where the whole thing was headed, stemming from a question I asked him about his collaborations with Tool. The consensus was that it has already outgrown our traditional idea of Rock and Roll. The only way that it’s headed from here is up, with the almost limitless capabilities of new technology and the immense community of artists finding ways to integrate if not completely overhaul their sound into the Electronic Realm. We think that the potential for this kind of music is truly unlimited and you will most certainly start to see more genres and ideas start to be brought to the table as time goes on.
